Why Renewal Requires Rest

There’s something about the end of winter being near that makes us want to do more, like get busy cleaning, organizing, exercising, and just start new things.

The light at the end of the tunnel, and suddenly, there’s more motivation and momentum.

But what I’ve learned both personally and professionally is that with each task we start doing, we need to factor in non-doing and rest.

Growth Is Built on Recovery

In nature, nothing grows without a dormant season.

Roots deepen in winter, systems recalibrate quietly, and energy gathers beneath the surface.

By Spring, what was being repaired in rest is revealed, and yet, culturally, we tend to try to skip that part.

We try to renew only through productivity, like adding more workouts, stricter routines, fast, aggressive skin treatments, and more plans.

What Rest Actually Does

Rest doesn't just include sleep; it also includes nervous system regulation.

When we rest deeply, cortisol lowers, circulation improves, hormones rebalance, collagen repair increases, and even our skin barrier function strengthens.

Rest impacts:

• Skin clarity

• Inflammation

• Oil production

• Digestion

• Emotional regulation

When the nervous system feels safe and enters the parasympathetic state, the body shifts into repair mode.

The Misunderstanding of “Doing Nothing”

I think many women struggle with rest because it feels unproductive.

But sometimes the most productive thing you can do for your skin, your energy, your relationships, is to slow down and pause.

Rest can look like:

• Going to bed earlier

• Sitting in a sauna without multitasking

• Receiving a massage or facial without checking your phone

• Saying no to an extra commitment

• Leaving white space in your calendar

I feel like I could probably write a book on this topic because of how much I can relate to it. As a mom of very active, extroverted twin tween girls, and the owner of a busy boutique spa with a team of 13, on a typical basis, I have a very full life. I have to intentionally factor in rest into my schedule because if not, I would be "doing" 24/7. Don't get me wrong, I love to work, and I love spending time with my daughters, but if I don't actively rest, I notice very quickly how burnout creeps in.

Rest Is Part of the Ritual

This is one of the reasons I believe so strongly in spa rituals. A facial at Citron isn’t just about masks and serums, and a body treatment isn’t just exfoliation and hydration.

They create structured rest during an hour where the nervous system shifts, the breath slows, and the body is supported and nurtured instead of being demanded from.

That stillness and deep relaxation where the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, is truly therapeutic.

Renewal Without Rest Is Depletion

You can force your way into a temporary glow with harsh agressive treatments and products, you can over-exfoliate your way into brightness, and you can caffeine your way into energy.

But sustainable renewal is the kind that feels grounded and slower, and it requires rest.

A couple of ways I plan on integrating rest even as we approach Spring are: slower mornings, ocean walks, pre-booking my spa treatments to stay on track, and simplifying meals to stay as healthy and stress-free as possible in the evenings.

I would love to hear what ideas you have to slow down as well!
