The Health + Wellness Benefits Your Body Experiences During Deep Relaxation

There’s a reason you leave a massage, facial, sauna session, or deeply restorative treatment feeling different. You’re simply more relaxed and feel lighter, softer, and more grounded.

During moments of true relaxation, something deeper begins happening beneath the surface where your body shifts.

As a holistic esthetician and spa owner, I’ve noticed that, of course, guests come in asking for skin results, but almost everyone leaves talking about how deeply they finally relaxed. I know for me personally, I am always excited about the glowing, radiant skin I will receive with a facial, but the biggest benefit for me is truly the way in which my body and mind deeply melt into a state of blissful calm, to the point I inevitably wake myself up snoring. We always take it as the best compliment when our guests fall asleep.

In a world where many of us spend so much of our time moving quickly, multitasking, and operating in a constant state of stress, this shift has become more important than ever.

Your Body Has Two Modes

The nervous system is constantly helping your body respond to what’s happening around you.

One side is designed for action.

This is often called “fight or flight.” It helps us handle deadlines, responsibilities, stress, and perceived threats.

When this system stays activated for long periods of time, the body can remain in a heightened state.

You may notice:

  • Tight muscles

  • Shallow breathing

  • Fatigue

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Increased tension

  • Feeling mentally overstimulated

  • Skin that suddenly feels reactive or inflamed

Then there’s the other side.

The state where healing, restoration, and repair begin.

Often referred to as “rest and digest,” this is where the body starts exhaling.

What Happens During Deep Relaxation

When the body feels safe enough to shift into deep relaxation, a cascade of changes begins to happen:

Breathing slows

Your breath naturally becomes deeper and more rhythmic.

Muscles begin to soften

Areas of chronic holding and tension gradually release.

Heart rate may decrease

The body begins conserving energy rather than preparing for action.

Circulation improves

Blood flow shifts and supports oxygen and nutrients moving throughout the body.

Digestion and repair can improve

The body redirects resources toward restoration.

Stress hormones can decrease

The body no longer feels like it needs to stay on high alert.

The mind often becomes quieter

Thoughts slow, and mental noise softens. This is why people often say they feel like they can finally breathe after a restorative treatment.

Your Skin Experiences It Too

Relaxation doesn’t only affect how you feel; our skin often responds as well.

When the body shifts out of stress mode:

  • Circulation may improve

  • Inflammation can soften

  • Skin may become more receptive

  • Facial tension can release

  • Puffiness can lessen

  • The complexion often appears brighter and more refreshed

This is one reason we believe results and relaxation do not need to exist separately.

At Citron, treatments are designed to support both. Relaxation isn’t simply a luxury addition; we believe in it being a major part of the entire experience.

Why Restorative Rituals Matter

Sometimes deep relaxation looks like a massage, sitting in an infrared sauna, a warm cup of tea, a slow walk, a quiet moment, or simple stillness.

The goal isn’t perfection.

As a business owner and mom, I know how easy it is to stay in go-mode. But I’ve learned, I really have had to intentionally factor in small ways to slow down and take care of myself throughout each day because the stress is something constantly being carried. This can look like a morning walk before I start my day, stepping outside midday to water my plants, taking a ride to get a tea during breaks at my daughter’s dance competitions, a gentle yoga class, planned nourishing meals, and a warm bath or sauna session while my girls are at dance.

It’s creating moments where the body can pause from constantly doing.

Because when that happens, muscles soften, stress can lessen, circulation improves, and the body redirects energy toward repair and restoration.

At Citron, this is why we thoughtfully weave together calming touch, infrared warmth, aromatherapy, sensory rituals, and restorative treatments.

Because the health benefits your body experiences during deep relaxation are often far more meaningful than simply feeling relaxed. You also walk away feeling renewed in ways that extend beyond the treatment room.

It’s support for your body, your mind, your skin, and your overall well-being.
