Radiance Through Change: Skincare + Wellness for Perimenopause

Ongoing wellness is not a one-size-fits-all. It's really about supporting the whole self, including mind, body, and skin, through every season of life (and there are many). One of the most notable transitions many women go through is perimenopause, the natural stage before menopause when hormones begin to shift.


This phase can bring changes in your skin, sleep, mood, and energy. And while it can sometimes feel overwhelming and confusing, with the right support and mindful care, it can also be a chance to embrace deeper self-nourishment and radiance.


What Is Perimenopause?


According to the Mayo Clinic, perimenopause typically begins in your 40s, though it can start earlier. It’s marked by fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels, which affect not only your reproductive cycle but also your skin, mood, and overall well-being.


This stage can last several years and eventually transitions into menopause, when the menstrual cycle stops completely.


How Do You Know If You’re Perimenopausal?


Perimenopause looks a little different for every woman, but common signs include:

  • Irregular periods (heavier, lighter, or skipped cycles)

  • Hot flashes or night sweats

  • Mood shifts, irritability, or anxiety

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Skin changes such as dryness, sensitivity, breakouts, or dullness

  • Changes in metabolism or body composition


Harvard Health notes that declining estrogen can directly affect skin by reducing collagen and elastin, which impacts firmness, thickness, and hydration.


At just about 42, I’ve started to notice hormonal changes showing up in different ways within myself. Some nights my sleep can fluctuate, my mood goes through more ups and downs, and even my skin experiences random breakouts, particularly on my chin, which is most always hormonal. Which is another reason I have made my self-care and wellness routines more of a non-negotiable in my schedule these days.


How Perimenopause Affects Skin


As estrogen declines, your skin may:

Lifestyle Wellness Tools


As a health coach, I always remind guests: your skin is a reflection of your overall well-being. Supporting your body holistically makes a big difference.


Here are a few simple practices to try:

  • Prioritize hydration (herbal teas, mineral-rich water, fresh fruits/veggies)

  • Focus on whole-food nutrition with plenty of leafy greens, healthy fats, and protein

  • Create a stress-reset ritual (breathwork, journaling, meditation, or a calming walk)

  • Aim for restorative sleep by keeping a cool, dark room and limiting screens before bed

  • Incorporate strength + movement to support metabolism and bone health


Some of my favorite (and essential) lifestyle wellness tools in my life are sticking to a healthy diet during the week, like starting every day with a smoothie packed with kale, spinach, Greek yogurt, protein, chia seeds, and berries, and allowing myself some freedom on the weekends. Generally, I go by the 80/20 rule (80% healthy, 20% eat what feels good). I also have a daily run and walk, breathwork, and a hot yoga class once per week. I try to sauna a couple of times a week as well and have a facial/ massage once per month.
