November is the perfect month to focus on gratitude and give thanks for all the wonderful people, places, and things in your life that make it beautiful, including yourself. Not only is gratitude an incredible tool to feel better on the inside, it also has powerful outer benefits as well.
When most people think of radiant, healthy skin, they think of serums, facials, and treatments. And while those matter (especially when they’re wellness-focused, like at Citron), there’s one often-overlooked factor that transforms your glow from the inside out: gratitude.
Practicing gratitude doesn’t just shift your mindset, it actually changes your biology. Research shows that consistent gratitude practices lower cortisol (the body’s primary stress hormone), regulate inflammation, and improve circulation and sleep, all of which directly impact your skin’s clarity, tone, and texture.
When your body feels safe, calm, and supported, your skin reflects that.
The Science of Gratitude and Skin Health
When we experience stress, our nervous system triggers a “fight or flight” response that increases cortisol levels. Over time, this can lead to:
• Breakouts and inflammation
• Slower skin healing
• Dullness or dehydration
• Flare-ups in conditions like acne, eczema, or rosacea
Practicing gratitude signals safety to the body. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system (your “rest and restore” mode), which balances hormones, calms inflammation, and helps your skin return to homeostasis.
During stressful seasons in business and life, my skin instantly mirrors my stress. I find gratitude to be one of the most powerful ways to feel better almost instantly. No matter what type of problem you’re dealing with, reminding yourself of all the ways your life is going well can completely transform your mood.
How Gratitude Shifts the Stress Response
Gratitude trains the mind to focus on abundance rather than lack, and that simple shift influences your entire stress response. You breathe deeper, your heart rate slows, and your body produces more serotonin and dopamine, both known to support mood and the skin’s natural repair process.
Over time, gratitude doesn’t just make you feel better; it helps your body process stress more gracefully, creating a visible difference in your skin’s vitality and brightness.
Gratitude is actually one of our team’s core values at Citron. We understand how having gratitude for our careers, our guests, and our relationships helps us live with joy daily and infuse that energy into the experience our guests love.
5 Ways to Practice Gratitude for Healthier Skin + Less Stress
1. Start and End Your Day With Gratitude
Before you scroll on your phone in the morning, name three things you’re grateful for, big or small. It sets your nervous system in a calm, positive state before the day begins.
Each morning I use the Calm app to do a breathwork meditation while drinking warm lemon water, followed by a gratitude check-in. I record three things I’m grateful for each day and often look back at past entries to see the bigger picture of all the ways my life is wonderful.
2. Turn Skincare Into a Mindful Ritual
Instead of rushing through your skincare routine, treat it as an opportunity to connect with your body. As you cleanse or moisturize, think of one thing you’re grateful for as you wash away the day’s stress. I love creating “triggers” for wellness habits I want to be consistent with. Your skincare ritual is the perfect opportunity to focus on wellness inside and out.
3. Express Gratitude to Others
Send a quick text, leave a note, or simply say thank you more often. Acts of appreciation strengthen connection, which releases oxytocin (the “bonding hormone”) known to counteract stress and support balanced cortisol levels.
4. Go on a Gratitude Walk
Take a refreshing walk outside, breathe deeply, and use it as an opportunity to notice things you appreciate, like the sunlight, the crisp air, the way your body moves, or the beauty of nature around you. Movement amplifies the calming effects of gratitude by increasing endorphins and oxygen flow to your skin.
5. Anchor Gratitude Into Self-Care Moments
Pair gratitude with your spa rituals. During an infrared sauna, facial, or massage, take a moment to silently thank yourself for all that you do. It enhances relaxation, deepens breath, and magnifies the healing response.
When I’m in the sauna, I use those 20 minutes to breathe deeply, meditate, and think about what I’m grateful for from the past week. It turns the experience into something restorative for both body and mind.
Your Skin Feels What You Feel
Your skin is a mirror of your inner world. When you live in gratitude, you reduce inflammation, support natural detoxification, and create a calm internal environment that allows your skin to thrive.
As both an esthetician and a health coach, I’m a firm believer that the most radiant glow comes from inner peace. Gratitude is one of the simplest and most effective inner skincare rituals we can practice.
