In short, clean beauty/skincare basically means non-toxic and free from harmful chemicals.
It matters to us because we are health focused and what you put on your skin is absorbed through the blood stream, and therefore, just as important as what you put in your bodies.
If we are skeptical that an ingredient has potential health risks based on published studies, we avoid it while continuing to research healthy alternatives that provide effective results.
In addition to choosing products that are healthy, we also choose products and practices that care for the overall environment, such as choosing products that are vegan, cruelty free, are ethically sourced. And of course we plant trees.
We really need to take caution into our own hands by sticking to clean beauty brands that have health values. I say this because currently in the USA, the FDA has restricted only 11 ingredients while in the EU over 1,300 ingredients are banned.
The scary truth is that a lot of ingredients in certain skin, body, and home care products contain carcinogens and irritants and have been linked to health problems like cancer and endocrine disruption.
Endocrine disruptors are quite creepy and dangerous. They are tiny molecules (like our own hormones) that have the ability to mimic and impersonate the body’s hormones and then mess with our endocrine system which regulates our moods, metabolism, and even our reproductive systems. There are long term health effects that have been linked to endocrine disruption such as cancer, birth defects, as well as metabolic and reproductive problems.
That all being said, let me tell you a little about the skin and body care products we use at citron.
Ingredients Sourced from Local Farms
Our seasonal facials and body remedies include herbal oils, masks, and scrubs that have been formulated with herbs sourced from local farms and farmer’s markets in Rhode Island. These products generally contain 3 ingredients, tops. We love supporting local and using the healthiest and freshest- and therefore most nutrient dense ingredients we can find.
