As estheticians, a very common question we get asked at the spa is, “What is the best order to use my skincare products?”.
There is in fact a specific order that produces the best results, so we created a step-by-step guide to walk you through your daily rituals in the most effective way. I also included some my personal favorite products for each step. There are a lot of different skin types, concerns, and goals but the products that I listed are my favorites for overall radiance, hydration, and ageless beauty (and what I’m currently using at home). If you would like to know which products are best within each category for your specific skin, I'd recommend having a facial so our estheticians can analyze your skin and give you personalized recommendations.
Before you get started, it will help to have some things prepped: your products, a clean, soft facecloth, a headband, maybe some of your favorite essential oils, - and you could even put on some light jazz music and light a candle to set a relaxing mood.
Step 1: Pre-Cleanse
The first step in your regimen should be to pre-cleanse to help loosen up all the make-up, dirt, and debris so that your cleanser is then able to come in and wash it all away. At the spa we use the Aveda Beautifying Composition oil for this step.
Step 2: Cleanse
Cleansing will refresh your skin and deep clean your pores by removing the dirt, sweat, debris, pollution, and excess oils. There are a variety of cleansers available, formulated with ingredients that address specific skin concerns. For example, if your skin is acne prone, a good cleanser would be the Glo Skin Beauty Beta Clarity Clear Skin Cleanser which contains salicylic acid to fight acne. I have a current rotation of two-three cleansers per week: GlyPro AHA Resurfacing Cleanser, Hydra-Bright AHA Cleanser, and the Gentle Cream Cleanser. I use the Hydra-Bright AHA Cleanser 4 days per week for a brightening boost and the GlyPro AHA Resurfacing Cleanser 3 days per week for a deeper radiance and to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with glycolic acid. If I do a peel and my skin is feeling rather sensitive, I use the Gentle Cream Cleanser for a few days.
Step 3: Exfoliate
Exfoliating removes dead, dull skin cells and increases cellular turnover of new healthy, radiant skin. You can begin by exfoliating 1-3 times per week and increase up to 5 times per week as needed. I am currently using the Brightening Polish but also love the Hydra-Bright Pro 5 Liquid Exfoliant. Glo Skin Beauty has a variety of exfoliants that are formulated for specific skin types or concerns such as acne, brightening, sensitivity, and aging.
Step 4: Mask
A mask is a relaxing treatment that will deliver skin nourishing vitamins, nutrients, and active ingredients deep into the epidermis. You could try meditating, doing gentle yoga, or soaking in a bath while your mask sits for 10 minutes. Glo Skin Beauty offers an assortment of masks that target specific skin goals such as firming, detoxing and clear skin, soothing sensitivity, hydrating, and brightening. I am loving the Phyto-Active Firming mask for ageless beauty- it’s the perfect uplift for the skin if you’ve had a stressful day or not the best night’s sleep. I also love the Soothing Gel Mask to incorporate into my regimen to soothe and hydrate if I do a peel at the spa.
Step 5: Tone
Toning helps balance the pH of the skin and tightens the pores which helps deliver a radiant skin tone. Toners can also be hydrating, soothing, and uplifting to the senses. I am currently using the HA Revive Hyaluronic Mist which contains hyaluronic acid for deep hydration.
Step 6: Serum
Serums deliver the most active ingredients of all the products in your regimen. This is where you can really focus on where you want to improve your skin and pick a serum based on those goals. I use a variety of serums throughout the week. Right now I am using Gly-Pro Retiniol Drops for ageless beauty in the evening, and rotating between HA Revive Hyaluronic drops for hydration, Bio-Renew EGF Drops for ageless beauty and collagen production, and Hydra-Bright Vitamin C Drops for brightening and pollution protection during the day.
Step 7: Eye Cream
The eye area is one of the most expressive areas on our faces, so it is important that we treat the skin with ingredients that help firm, strengthen and moisturize. I am currently using the C-Shield Eye Restore Hydrator- which is an antioxidant and vitamin rich eye cream that helps diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dark circles, and puffiness.
Step 7: Moisturize + SPF
The final step in your skincare regimen is to moisturize and protect with SPF (SPF during the day only). Glo Skin Beauty also formulates its moisturizers to address a variety of skin goals. I am personally trying to achieve a hydrated, radiant glow and of all the moisturizers I have tried, the Hydra Bright AHA Hydrator with vegan lactic acid has produced the most amazing results. I use the Hydra Bright AHA Hydrator during the day and the Bio Renew EGF Cream at night to help rebuild and thicken the collagen to counteract the thinning effects of retinol.
If you need help figuring out which products are best for your skin type, our estheticians will analyze your skin and provide you with customized recommendations with any facial reservation.
