How to Build Your Dry Skincare Routine

ree

Not only is dry skin one of our guests’ top concerns at Citron, but my whole family, including myself, faces the challenge of combating dryness this time of year. Dryness doesn’t just lead to dullness; it can also trigger fine lines and even surprise breakouts. When your skin lacks water, your body signals the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. The result is skin that is oily on the surface but still dehydrated underneath.

I know I’m prone to dryness-induced acne during this season, especially when the cold weather, stress, and long to-do lists add to the imbalance.

Why Dryness Accelerates Aging

When your skin’s moisture barrier weakens, it can’t hold hydration or defend against environmental stressors. The result is fine lines, dullness, and irritation appearing sooner.

Think of your barrier like the seal on a hydration jar. When it cracks, all the goodness inside escapes.

Dehydration leads to:

  • Dull, tight, or flaky texture

  • Increased sensitivity or redness

  • Loss of plumpness and elasticity

  • Fine lines around the eyes and mouth

  • Collagen and elastin breakdown

  • Slower cell turnover and uneven texture

Hydrate From Within: The Nutrition and Water Connection

Your skin’s glow begins with how you hydrate your body. While drinking water doesn’t directly moisturize the surface of your skin, it plays a vital supporting role in how your skin functions overall.

When your body is well hydrated, every organ and cell benefits, including your skin, which is the body’s largest organ. Proper hydration keeps your circulatory and lymphatic systems flowing smoothly, allowing nutrients and oxygen to reach skin cells more effectively while helping to flush out toxins.

That said, the outermost layer of your skin (the stratum corneum) doesn’t automatically receive moisture from the water you drink. Drinking water supports your glow from within, but topical hydration through moisturizers, serums, and oils is what hydrates externally and locks that moisture in.

Drink Water with Intention

  • Aim for half your body weight in ounces of water each day, or more if you use saunas or exercise regularly.

  • Sip throughout the day instead of drinking large amounts all at once to help your body absorb hydration more efficiently.

  • Add electrolytes, cucumber slices, or a pinch of sea salt to boost absorption.

  • Herbal infusions such as lemon balm, chamomile, or ginger add antioxidants and help calm the nervous system.

Eat Water-Rich Foods

Hydrating foods support elasticity and help maintain balance:

  • Cucumber, celery, romaine: structured water and minerals

  • Watermelon, oranges, citrus: hydration and vitamin C synergy

  • Avocados, olives: essential fatty acids that repair the skin barrier

  • Berries: antioxidants that help retain moisture

  • Zucchini, bell peppers, leafy greens: mineral-rich and alkalizing

My favorite morning ritual is warm lemon water and breathwork. It rehydrates after sleep, boosts digestion, and starts my skin glowing from within.

    Step-by-Step Dry Skin Routine

1. Gentle Cleansing

Cleanse without stripping your skin’s natural moisture.

  • Primary Cleanser: Gentle Cream Cleanser softens and supports hydration.

  • Two to three times per week: Phyto-Active Enzyme Cream Cleanser for gentle exfoliation and added glow.

  • Additional option a few times per week: GlyPro AHA Resurfacing Cleanser to smooth texture and lift dullness.

Rotating your cleanser keeps your barrier balanced. Some days your skin needs a very gentle, calming cleanser, and other days it benefits from a little extra polish. If you looked into my bathroom cabinet, you might be shocked by how many Glo Skin Beauty products I have. The truth is, I don’t use all of them every day. I rotate cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers depending on what my skin needs at the moment.

2. Smart Exfoliation

Dry skin still needs exfoliation, but overdoing it can make dehydration worse. Focus on barrier-friendly formulas and always follow with hydration.

Skin Type

Frequency

Exfoliant Type

Recommended Glo Product

Mild dryness

Two to three times per week

Enzyme or gentle AHA

Brightening Polish (papaya enzymes and jojoba beads)

Moderate dryness

Two to three times per week

Multi-acid liquid exfoliant

Hydra-Bright Pro 5 Liquid Exfoliant

Dull or congested

Two to three times per week

BHA exfoliant

Beta-Clarity BHA Drops (salicylic and glycolic blend)

3. Layer Hydration

Think of this step as saturating your skin in vitamin-infused water and then sealing it in.

Step 1: Hydrating Mist → HA-Revive Hyaluronic Mist

Step 2: Hyaluronic Serum → HA-Revive Hyaluronic Drops or Daily Hydration Drops

Step 3: Eye Cream → Bio-Renew EGF Eye Cream (restores firmness and moisture balance)

Step 4: Moisturizer (seal and protect)

  • Hydra-Bright AHA Hydrator for daytime radiance and mild resurfacing

  • Restorative Cream for evening comfort and barrier repair

  • Phyto-Active Conditioning Oil Drops to add nourishment and glow

There’s something so uplifting about having quenched, hydrated skin. My favorite ritual is applying Phyto-Active Drops and Restorative Cream, then relaxing with chamomile tea and a movie with my daughters and husband.

4. Weekly Treatment Boosts

Give your skin a deeper drink once or twice a week.

  • Restorative Mask (Squalane and Superfruit): deeply replenishes moisture and strengthens barrier function.

As a busy mompreneur, I love masking in the shower with a few drops of lemongrass essential oil. It turns a quick routine into a calming spa ritual.

5. SPF Always

Even in cool weather, UV rays accelerate collagen breakdown and dryness.

  • Oil-Free SPF 40 or Moisturizing Tint SPF 30. The Oil-Free version includes hyaluronic acid for added hydration.
