A Holistic Mood Reset: How to Rebalance Your Body and Mind Naturally

When seasons shift into shorter days, colder air, and less sunlight, our energy often follows. We may feel more tired, unmotivated, or notice our skin and mood reflecting that same dullness. The good news is small, intentional choices can help us feel more grounded, uplifted, and nourished from the inside out.
At Citron, we believe in tuning in rather than pushing through, using natural care as medicine for both body and mind.
Winter can definitely affect my own mood and I do intentionally make sure that I am incorporating all of the ideas listed in this blog to help manage these changes during the winter months. Taking vacations to someplace warm definitely helps and we have our trip booked, but I find that small, consistent habits are really what makes the biggest difference regularly.
1. Reconnect to Rhythm: Light, Sleep, and Movement
Our bodies thrive on rhythm, yet winter can easily disrupt it. Diminished daylight affects our circadian rhythm and serotonin production, which are key for balanced sleep, mood, and energy.
Start small:
Step outside for natural light within 30 minutes of waking, even on cloudy days.
Keep consistent sleep and wake times to help your body find stability.
Add gentle movement that feels grounding — like yoga, stretching, or walking.
Since sunlight in Rhode Island can be scarce, consider a dawn-simulating light or infrared sauna sessions. Infrared heat gently warms the body from within, stimulating circulation and endorphins much like natural sunlight, but without the harmful UV exposure. Just 20–30 minutes can help boost mood, ease tension, and promote restful sleep.
I love incorporating all of these things. Daily morning walks with my husband, Dan, and my French bulldog, Elias, are a non-negotiable for me. It’s what keeps me grounded, clear-minded, and refreshed for the day ahead.
My hot yoga on Thursday nights is my emotional detox ritual, and the infrared sauna at Citron truly feels like I spent a relaxing day at the beach. I also always need time to wind down before bed, so I sit with a cup of chamomile tea, watch a movie with my family, and try to do a little reading after.

2. Feed Your Mood: Nourishing Foods for Energy and Calm
What we eat directly impacts how we feel. Whole, grounding foods rich in nutrients help regulate blood sugar and stabilize emotions.
Focus on:
Complex carbohydrates (sweet potatoes, oats, lentils) to support serotonin.
Healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, flaxseed) for hormone and brain health.
Mineral-rich soups and seasonal produce that comfort and restore.
This is the time of year that I get consistent with meal prep. It really becomes a necessity during the busy holiday season. In fact, I will be posting a blog soon on some of my favorite winter meal prep recipes like Warm Root Veggie + Grain Bowls with Tahini-Lemon Drizzle. I pair this with some avocado toast on rustic sourdough for quick, healthy lunches throughout the week.
3. Support Your Nervous System: Breathe, Pause, and Reset
Stress depletes mood-regulating minerals like magnesium and B vitamins, making “calm” harder to access. Supporting your nervous system starts with intentional pauses where your body feels safe enough to shift out of “fight or flight” and into deep restoration.
Practice slow breathing, grounding aromatherapy, or short moments of mindfulness throughout your day. Even one minute of stillness between appointments can shift your state.
Try this quick reset:
Inhale deeply for four counts
Hold for seven
Exhale slowly for eight
Repeat three times, softening the shoulders and chest
Each morning, I begin the day with this breathwork ritual for emotional cleansing, and I pair it with steamy lemon water for a physical cleansing. The whole ritual is so therapeutic and really sets me up in a grounded, calm way to start my day as a mom and business owner.
Beyond at-home resets, our stress-relieving, deep-relaxation facials and massages are intentionally designed to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of the body responsible for rest, repair, and emotional balance. Slow, rhythmic massage techniques, warm towels, mindful touch, and our calming aromatherapy blends work together to quiet the mind, soften muscle tension, and induce a full-body exhale.
Many guests describe this shift as a deep, grounding release, as if everything inside finally quiets and melts, allowing the nervous system to rebalance in a way that’s difficult to achieve on your own.

4. Embrace the Season: Soothing Winter Blues
Winter calls us to slow down and reflect inward, and while this quietness can feel heavy at times, it is also a chance to rest and realign.
If you feel the “winter blues,” you can start by creating warmth and connection wherever possible:
Use soft lighting and cozy scents (think rosemary, citrus, or vanilla).
Keep rituals that bring you joy: a weekly sauna session, journaling, or an herbal bath.
Stay connected to others; even a brief, meaningful conversation can lift your spirit.
I was just talking to my husband, Dan, the other day about ways we can infuse more joy into the colder months, and some things we do are: an outdoor run paired with a sauna ritual, staycation planning, date nights, and taking pleasure in spending time at home cooking and embracing feeling cozy.
5. Rebalance Naturally: Herbal and Holistic Allies
Plants and minerals can offer gentle support for mood and balance. Consider:
Magnesium (for calm and muscle relaxation)
Vitamin D3 (for sunlight support)
Adaptogens like ashwagandha or rhodiola (to help your body handle stress)
Aromatherapy: especially citrus or rosemary essential oils to invigorate and uplift
These small allies help the body return to balance and can enhance your overall wellness rituals.
Magnesium and Vitamin D are must-haves for me, especially this time of year. Magnesium helps a lot with my sleep, and Vitamin D with my mood. I also love incorporating aromatherapy (lemon and rosemary, of course) into a steam shower or bath for a grounding yet uplifting effect.
6. Mindset Reset: Shift from Doing to Being
Sometimes the best way to rebalance is to pause the endless striving and soften into just being. Winter is a natural season for looking inward, not productivity overload.
Give yourself permission to do less. Let a bath, a facial, or a moment of stillness become a sacred act of restoration rather than another task.
As a natural “doer”, and at times workaholic because I love my work so much, this can be challenging, but in the best way possible. When I force myself to slow down and just enjoy the feeling of doing less, it really is blissful. The colder months are the perfect time to engage in rest and relaxation, letting your body repair itself.
Your Holistic Reset Invitation
A holistic mood reset isn’t about perfection; it’s about mindfulness and taking small steps. As you go through the winter, do what feels most nourishing, balancing, and calming for you.
