There was never very much evidence of the usefulness of herbs for the busy until recently. But herbs are a great thing when used properly. Herbs will not replace pharmaceuticals, but for many conditions, can work well and are less costly. Herbs usually do not yield side effects because they are still in a whole, natural state and he other parts if the plant often mitigate the side effects. Here are some great herbs that are not only common, but are a great way to start a more natural healing:
Chamomile possesses anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory properties. It also contains alpha-bisabolol that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by accelerating the healing process of the skin.
Ginger is excellent for treating upset stomachs and is also effective at treating gas and bloating. Ginger can prevent stomach upset from many sources, including pregnancy, motion sickness and chemotherapy. It works by blocking the effects of serotonin, a chemical in the brain and stomach when you're nauseated, and by stopping the production of free radicals, another cause of upset in your stomach. Ginger also helps blood flow, which may lower blood pressure. It's anti-inflammatory properties can also help ease arthritis.
Garlic can lower your cancer risk. Garlic contains more than 70 active phytochemicals, including allicin, which many studies have shown decreases high blood pressure by as much as 30 points. Garlic may help prevent strokes, as well by slowing arterial blockages. Crushed, fresh garlic offers the best cardiovascular and cancer-fighting benefits.
Lavender is famous for it's relaxing effects of the mind but it soothes the skin too! Rich in a compound called linalool, lavender assists with skin healing while also preventing tissue degeneration, keeping skin firm and preventing wrinkles. Lavender encourages the growth of new skin cells due to it's cytophylactic properties. It also helps heal wounds, scar tissue, acne, eczema and problem skin. Being anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-toxic, anti-bacterial and anti-septic just goes to show how amazing lavender is for the skin. At Citron Spa we offer a Stress Fix Massage and a Stress Fix Manicure and Pedicure. These signature Aveda treatments incorporate organic lavender and sage, clinically proven to reduce stress upon smelling.
Aloe Vera can increase collagen naturally when ingested or applied topically. Aloe Vera is an anti-inflammatory and prevents infection. An aloe vera gel will ease discomfort caused by painful skin irritations such as sunburn, minor (second degree) burns, and acne. It's also a potent source of alpha-hydroxy acids that nourish skin and diminish wrinkles.
There are many, many more herbs to try out there but start with these and you'll be we'll on your way to feeling great!
